American actor Chris Evans popular for his role as Captain America in Marvel movies, is encouraging people to sign-up for the poll duty for the coming November election. He posted on Twitter “ This week Power The Polls signed up 250++ new poll workers for Nov! That’s amazing but I bet we can do even better! If you want to protect the vote this year, here’s your chance to be a PollHero.”
America is facing a record shortage of poll workers this year due to the coronavirus. The democracy of the nation depends on a smooth run of elections and everyone’s vote discounted.
Power the Polls is the first-of-its-kind initiative to recruit poll workers to ensure a safe, fair election for all voters. Most of the poll workers are over the age of 60 and, during this time of uncertainty due to the pandemic, fewer people are signing up for the job.
The shortage in the poll workers have already been felt negatively in recent primary elections, where the shortage in poll workers led to the long lines and voters disenfranchisement.
Power the Polls is recruiting people to sign-up for the poll duty through https://www.powerthepolls.org/signup?source=go#form. The aim of this initiative is to recruit 250,000 Americans to sign-up for the duty.
Chris Evans retweeted Julia Louis Dreyfus’s tweet which conveys the importance of the poll workers. “Without poll workers, polling locations close. That means your community might miss the chance to vote. As long as you’re 16, you can be a poll worker. Guess what – you’ll even get paid to do it!” She wrote.
Many responded with promises to sign-up and to share this initiative. Those who have already signed up thanked Evans for his concern of the election.
