The movie ‘Megan is missing’,released back in 2011 recently garnered an escalated viewership via all the social media including Twitter and Tik Tok! Megan Is Missing is a controversial horror film that has been the subject of many conversations since its release and most recently this weekend on social media as people began watching it and sharing their reactions to the film.
The primary reason behind the movie receiving an increased upsurge these days is primarily because of the rumour that it is based on real events. Is it really? Also despite of a series of warning from the director of the movie, Michele Goi that it’s unhealthy to watch the movie alone, belligerent attempts made by the viewers he created a dilemma.
‘Megan is Missing’: Is the movie based on real life?
The movie, which was filmed in the “found footage style,” follows Megan Stewart, a popular high school student, in the days leading up to her disappearance. When she goes missing after going to see a boy she met online, her best friend decides to start an investigation.
While the movie appears realistic and was based on various real-life disappearances and abductions, it is a fictional film and it is not based on one specific case. Megan Stewart’s character is played by actress Rachel Quinn and her best friend Amy’s character is played by Amber Perkins, according to IMDB. The film’s director, Michael Goi, based the film on seven true child abduction cases and the movie was endorsed by the KlaasKids Foundation, a U.S. child safety advocacy group, according to a screening poster.
But recently when the news that the clips from the movie came exploding via tik tok made the director restless.”I didn’t get to give you the customary warnings that I used to give people before they watched Megan Is Missing, which are: do not watch the movie in the middle of the night, do not watch the movie alone, and if you see the words ‘Photo Number 1’ pop up on your screen, you have about four seconds to shut off the movie if you’re already freaking out before you start seeing things that maybe you don’t want to see,” added Michele Goi.
Within seconds of its release the social media platforms were inundated with shocking revelations from the viewers concerning the daring impacts of the movie.
One person wrote, “megan is missing man,, that s*** got me staring at the wall and wanting to delete all my social media accounts and never come back ever again.”Another said, “Just watched the movie Megan is missing…. I am not okay. THE PHOTOS… THE FOOTAGE… I-“
“It is 5am and for some reason Megan Is Missing is trending so I wanted to give anyone who may be interested in watching it a warning that it is a horror based on *realistic* trauma. It is extremely graphic and triggering to survivors of sexual assault, rape, abuse, and violence,” tweeted a third.
The movie was banned in New Zealand in October 2011, due to its graphic depictions of sexual and physical violence, along with its objectifying depictions of underage women. The movie is not available on Netflix or Amazon Prime but it can be rented on YouTube, iTunes and Google Play, according to Decider.
