Indian Navy Day 2020: The reason behind Indian Navy Day celebrated on 4th December

Indian Navy Day 2020: Every year Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year on 4th December. The day marks the Indian Navy’s Operation Trident took place in the year 1971 an operational victory of Navy India- Pakistan war.

The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces. The other two forces for safeguarding the country are the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force,  The President of India empowers the Supreme Commander of Indian Navy and the Chief of Naval Staff who commands the Navy. The Maratha Emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhonsle of the 17th century is considered as “ Father of the Indian Navy”.

History of Indian Navy Day:

Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 in commemoration of Operation Trident, the attack launched by the Indian Navy on Karachi harbor during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971, The operation brought heavy damage on Pakistani vessels but India did not face much loss. Three warships from the Indian Naval played an important role in the attack- INS Nipat, INS Nirghat, and INS Veer. 

About 3 million people died. Around 10 million people from East Pakistan crossed the borders to seek refugee in India then Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi extended full humanitarian support to them. As India started supporting the east Pakistan’s liberation movement, Pakistan attacked 11 airbases in India.

Navy Day is also celebrated as a part of securing marine borders and to strengthen the relationship with other countries for humanitarian missions and relief operations. There is a Naval ceremony organized in Gateway of India in Mumbai on the eve of the day. The theme of Navy Day 2020 is Indian Navy Combat Ready, Credible and Cohesive. The status marks the Covid-19 and Chinese attempts on India.

The Navy is ready to face both these challenges, “ Admiral Karambir Singh, the Navy chief said at a press conference on the eve of Navy Day.

As a part of Navy Day, various events is been organized by the Indian Navy as a tribute to the Naval branch. But this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, it has been turned virtually. A virtual tour will be held which allows the viewers to watch INS Vikramaditya, viewers can explore the flight deck and other classified areas of the warship as per a report from the news agency.
